Anger Management is,simply put, learning how to reconfigure the brain through lifestyle changes and language.
For years, neuroscientists have touted the neuroplasticity of the child's brain, claiming that the adult brain is too hard wired and fixed to be malleable. My mother used to tell us that she could never learn French the way we(the children) did. Our young brains, she told us, were soft and absorbent whereas her brain had hardened like cement in the sun.
Like many medical "facts" thrown out the window by new research, this one of the hard and indelible brain has also become an urban legend. Not only is our brain capable of changing its maps, brain-mapping is governed by the principle of use: use it or lose it!
Every experience produces neurological changes in the brain. Anger management is learning how to re-direct experiences so that new neural circuitry can replace the old, toxic ones. Diet, exercise and lifestyle changes can carve new neural routes in the brain--neural routes that reinforced can lead to new behavior.
What is Anger Control?
It is Life Management--watching what you feed yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
It is Resonating with the Right Metaphors. As Steven Pinker states in The Stuff of Thought:Language as a Window into Human Nature, "...people think in metaphor...TO THINK IS TO GRASP A METAPHOR...."
Resonating with the Right Metaphor builds new circuitry in the Brain and that is the key to behavior changes.
